2. Social Media Awareness
-
Caitlin Lawler, Youth Services Coordinator, Lewis County DSS
Screen time is an essential part of our daily lives in today’s digital world. However, this presentation dives into awareness to recognize that the amount of time spent and content consumed can impact both our physical and mental health. Especially for youth growing up and developing surrounded by ever evolving and new technology. The online world has many benefits, but dangers we also need to be aware of such as exploitation, scams, data collection, misinformation, validation and comparisons, along with an overall decrease in socialization in person. If we are going to be using screens, we need to make sure it is in a positive and well-informed way.
3. Restorative Practices Circles- A Community Building Tool
-
Gregg A Scheiner, MS Restorative Practices, MBA, BA, Director of Restorative Practices and Restorative Practices Trainer, LIDRC- EAC Network
Circles are a versatile Restorative Practice communication process that develops communication and problem-solving skills. The Circle Process allows all participants to have a voice and to be heard (Pranis 2008) as they collaboratively develop deeper understanding and create a solution to an issue being presented. You will participate in an abbreviated circle and will be provided with a handout on the stages of the circles and being a circle keeper. Handouts will be provided.

1. Curing the Community: A Strength-Based Approach to Youth Justice
-
Lewis Zuchman, Executive Director, SCAN-Harbor, Inc.
Inspired by Frantz Fanon, who said “My job is to cure the hospital,” this workshop re-imagines interventions with justice-involved, inner-city youth. It asks: What if our goal was to “cure the community”? How can we achieve this same transformation by leveraging two positive contributions from our inner-city youth? And how can we bring this to life through a strength-based, positive practice approach?
2. Emerging Online Threats: 764 and the Rise of Nihilistic Violent Extremism in Youth
-
FBI Albany JTTF Supervisory Special Agent Charles Keller
-
FBI Albany JTTF Task Force Officer/NYSP Senior Investigator Jason Manchuck
Online networks linked to 764 and similar communities represent a growing concern for youth safety. These decentralized online groups promote nihilistic violent extremism (NVE) and often target minors and young adults - frequently those under age 25 - through gaming platforms, chat servers and social media. This presentation will assist in recognizing and responding to situations where individuals may be approached, manipulated, or exploited by these networks.
3. Conflict Mapping - A Refining Tool
-
Gregg A Scheiner, MS Restorative Practices, MBA, BA, Director of Restorative Practices and Restorative Practices Trainer, LIDRC- EAC Network
Conflict mapping is a valuable visual analytical tool used to understand the key components of a dispute, providing a systematic approach to understanding the various dimensions of a conflict situation. It graphically represents the parties involved, their relationships, interests, and power dynamics. It is widely used in conflict resolution and peacebuilding and is appliable to youth conflicts. Handouts will be provided.
